Insurance Company Requires Efficacy Review of Traction Device
ICTM principals are often called upon to evaluate the clinical value of newly-marketed medical devices. Recently, we performed a comprehensive review of an automated traction device (VAX-D) which the insurance companies felt was being overused and resulted in astronomical claims costs as the cost of treatment was outrageously expensive. We reviewed the literature and other scientific support for the efficacy of this device and various positions that payers and Canadian provinces had published on this device. Our evaluation report of the VAX-D medical device was used by our client as supporting evidence to deny the inappropriate claims and charges being made for using this device. Our physician's testimony before the Workers' Compensation Commission supplemented our report and led to a favorable ruling by the Commission against the use and excessive charges for this device.
