Butadiene Release and Retention by Claims-Handling Group

When a large chemical facility in South Texas had a flare out, butadiene was released. It was claimed by 4000 residents of a nearby town that they were adversely affected in various ways. After the claims-handling group sent the individuals to local physicians of their own choosing, they found themselves in some difficulty. The local physicians knew nothing about the chemical. They knew nothing about the exposure. They knew only what their patients told them. Our medical staff compiled relevant literature, analyzed the potential exposures and developed a white paper which was sent to a hundred local physicians. We consulted with those local physicians who wanted to speak about the issue and, thereby, lessened the liability risk of a claim which was otherwise spiraling out-of-control.
